Angela Gheorghiu’s sensitively portrayed Tosca, a character with which she closely identifies, is paired with Jonas Kaufmann’s intense and compelling Cavaradossi, while Bryn Terfel is thrillingly malevolent as Scarpia. Cornel MacNeil, as Scarpia, does a more than credible job but, if you want to see the ultimate Scarpia, you need to view the EMI Gheorghiu production, in which Bryn Terfel nails the role. Jonathan Kent’s atmospheric and evocative production of Tosca – which has established itself as a Royal Opera classic – features a stunning cast. Shirley Verrett, as Tosca, is very good to excellent but not as good as Angela Gheorghiu, in the EMI Classics production (50999 4 04063 9 8). ![]()
